Organic Facts
How often have you got your shopping home from the supermarket and opened a fresh packet of tomatoes, salad or fruit to find its gone off? You look at the sell by date and that is okay, so what has happened to your fresh produce?
Well, fresh is the operative word here. Your produce has been picked unripened and then kept artificially cooled to allow for it to be transported hundreds of miles to other countries, where it is then sprayed with ethylene to artificially cause it to ripen as it is placed on those supermarket shelves for you to take home. It is not fresh, it does not taste as nice and it is not as good for you as the organic alternative would be.
Fruit and vegetable consumption accounts for 10% of our annual CO2 emissions, whether via artificial heating of greenhouses or the transportation from plant to shelf or even our use of the car to travel to and from out of town supermarkets. The answer: eat local, eat seasonal and eat organic produce free from pesticides and artificial additives.
